What Is an HVAC System?

An HVAC system is an integral component of any home or business. It consists of three primary elements: air handling units, ducts and vents that move air, and a centralized control system for heating and cooling operations.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers defines an HVAC as “a system with three functions: to bring fresh air into a building, cool or heat that air, and blow that heated air into indoor spaces.” These can be done simultaneously if one does not override another.

An excellent example is a central air conditioning and heating system. This type of setup has an inlet unit that draws air in, then uses a blower to distribute it throughout your home, as well as a filter that removes dust particles and other impurities from the air.

This type of system is ideal for larger homes, where multiple rooms require heating or cooling simultaneously. Unfortunately, it comes at a cost since ductwork must be installed to connect all of the air-handling units together.

A duct-free or mini-split system is another viable choice for businesses. This unique design can be perfect for new construction as well as service venues like hotels or restaurants since it’s more energy efficient than a traditional HVAC system.
